Archibald Frederick Mitchell (1840-1865): The Doctor

Archibald Frederick Mitchell was born on the Isle of Bute, Scotland, November 23rd, 1840.  His father is Donald Mitchell and his mother is Agnes McLean.

In 1841, Archibald lived with his mother and sister Agnes on the Isle of Bute, near Rothesay.  Archibald's father Donald is not listed in the census.  Perhaps, he has already left for Canada?

Sometime before 1845 Archibald immigrates to Ontario, Canada with his parents and siblings. I haven't found any arrival documents for the Mitchell family yet.  Before he was married, Archibald lived with his father, brother, and three sisters in the township of Mariposa, Victoria County.  The 1861 census lists him as a student, probably attending medical school.

Archibald Mitchell married Margaret Elizabeth Victoria Ruttan September 23rd, 1862. Here is the marriage register from Frontenac, Ontario.  Archibald and Victoria had only one child together, Donald Frederick Mitchell, born 1863.

I have yet to find a record of Archibald's death, however, I believe he died young, sometime between 1864 and 1870. His widow Victoria remarries in 1870.  Her obituary refers to Archibald as Dr. Archibald Mitchell of Glencoe.  I'm still looking to find out where he attended school.  I found him listed in the Register of Medical Licenses for Canada, dated May 14, 1864.
