Margaret Elizabeth Victoria Ruttan (1845-1907) : Maggie

Margaret Elizabeth Victoria Ruttan is my fourth great-grandmother.  She was born February 7th, 1845 in Adolphustown, Ontario.  Her mother was Elizabeth McConkey of Ireland and her father was Captain Matthew Ruttan, a loyal British citizen who fought for the King during the war of 1812.  The Ruttan family and other Loyalists left New York after the war, due to the hostility towards anyone still loyal to the King and England.  They fled to Canada and were rewarded land there. Queen Victoria was Queen of England 1837-1901, a newly crowned queen at the time of Maggie's birth. I imagine many parents at that time named their newborn baby girls after the queen, especially if they were Loyalists.

Maggie married Archibald Frederick Mitchell September 23rd,1862 in Frontenac at the age of 17.  Archibald was from Scotland and his family had immigrated to Ontario.  He was also a doctor.  Their marriage was very brief as Archibald died shortly after, leaving Maggie with a young son, Donald Frederick Mitchell.

Maggie and Fred moved back in with her parents, until she remarried to John M. Loyst in 1870.  The Loyst family were also Loyalists and had helped to settle Adolphustown and surrounding areas of Ontario.

Maggie had five more children with John Loyst; George (1874), Nelletta (1876), William (1878), Leoni (1881), and Helen (1882).
